Profesional Engineer Exam..(Ir.)

Hi, salam ketemuan semula..... yaahhh,...alhamdullillah syukur kepada Allah kerana dengan limpah kurnianya saya telah melepasi temuduga bagi mendapatkan sijil bagi P.E (Profesional Engineer, Ir) pada 30/10/2009. sedikit sebanyak pada masa yang terluang ini saya ingin berkongsi pengalaman dan juga pengetahuan serta tips-tips bagi persediaan menghadapi peperiksaan tersebut.

Exam P.E ini dijalankan oleh pihak IEM (Institut Engineer Malaysia) di bawah seliann BEM (Board Engineer Malaysia), so dengan kata lain, IEm akan menjalankan semua tugasan yang harus dilakukan oleh pihak BEM bagi mengiktiraf seseorang pengamal engineering untuk mendapatkan taraf sebagai Profesional Engineer. seperti yang sedia maklum, kita harus mendaftar sebagai Graduate Engineer (Grad.IEM) terlebih dahulu dengan BEM dan daftar plak dengan IEM. kemudian kena tunggu 3 tahun untuk latihan praktikal atau kita kerja la, dalam masa 3 tahun kena habiskan course wajib IEM yang terdapat 4 course kesemuanya. selepas cukup tempoh edahnya, kita kena buat permohonan untuk duduki interview P.E ni lah, adalah dokumen ynag kita kena submit kat IEM ni. bersama dengan itu kita kena buat summary of experience of kita punya kerja selama 3 tahun dengan detailnya, saya ader sample dia kalau sapa2 nak dan boleh hubungi saya. Kemudian IEM akan cari satu P.E untuk jadi interviewer kita, Interviewer ini aan call kita set date utk buat exam dan interview la. Biasanya dia bagi max 2 bulan sahaja. Dalam masa ini pemohon perlu menyediakan submission report atau project report ( 1 projek sahaja) dan submit kat interviewer kita. Dia akan semak dan komen project reprot kita, kalau dia rasa anda masih x layak lagi dia akan hubungi anda dan bagitau anda kena belajar lebih lagi sblm apply for interview baru, so anda kena betul2 pandai la dalam design dan site works yg anda handle itu.

Masa interview - selama 4-5 jam (setengah hari laa..) terbahagi kepada 2 sesi iaitu temuduga dan essay. Terdapat 2 penemuduga yang akan interview anda...saya pun 2 org gak, jadi banyak diorang tanya saya pasal bilik OT dan cleanroom system, tapi itu mmg kerja saya buat hari2, satu kali tanya 10 kali saya jawab..alhamdulilah, with flying color. Sbb ada satu soalan saya tanya diorang dan diorang x bleh nak jawab masalah tersebut, ala simple ajer...tapi diorang kena buktikan skit melalui calculation..hahaha, diorang cakap nak kena buat satu technical talk/seminar for 1 day utk bincang pasala benda ni. baguslah sbb smpi sekrang sy pun x leh nak buktikan melalui pengiraan pasal menda ni.. ok then, kena spent masa 3 jam nak buat 2 essay. satu esaay pasal kita punyer teknikal skill dan satu essay lagi pasal code of ethics (COE). ini COE kita kena baca laa...hehehe, jawapan semua 15 answer tu ader ngan saya kalau nak heheh..

After all finish interviewer akan semak dan bagi balik kat IEM. Normalnya 90% interview akan lulus la dengan syarat mmg anda kena jawab essay itu jangan dibiar kosong ajer, so mmg kena study skitlah...ok dah penat tulisnya..sambung lain kali. Bye.

update: 30/9/2016 - Dear all, terlebih dahulu saya ucapkan terima kasih pada pembaca yg mengunjungi blogspot saya ini dan saya bersyukur blogspot ini dpt membantu para adik-adik semua atau abg2 dan kakak2 yg mahu meningkatkan karier masing-masing dlm bidang engineering ini yg amt mencabar dan menarik, oleh demikian terdapat pemintaan ramai pembaca dari setahun ke setahun yg mahu mendapatkan set soalan COE dari saya. Dengan ini saya berbesar hati utk attach kan disini terus set soalan tersebut. Cuma apabila tuan/puan dah dowload  set soalan tersebut saya harap tuan/puan cuma komen "terima kasih" di ruangan komen dibawah serta doakan saya semoga sihat, panjang umur dan dimurahkan rezeki utk saya berjuang dan memperkembangkan carier saya ini. Saya juga berazam utk membantu tuan/puan semua yg mana saya mampu bg mencapai cita2 tuan/puan.

Bagi report technical, mohon maaf saya dahulukan sbb report technical lama saya sudah hilang semasa saya reformat laptop saya dulu, tapi sample report tuan/puan bleh mintak direct dengan IEM atau kekawan lain yg ada..good luck semua..!!

Ans:     Is it really a dilemma
            Technology comes with cost
Reduction of scope of work
Simple design
Offer what the client wants and can afford.
            Stick to the best quality materials at the best rates.
            Clarify all impact and implications to clients
            Be reminded of safety; low maintenance and optimum life-cycle cost.

Q 2 Benefits of privatization.
Ans:     Examples of privatized public utility companies in Malaysia.
            Case studies of Power and Water companies.
Be clear about the differences between BOT, concession and other forms of business by the government to the public.
Stability of supply / lower down-time / better quality services
Faster decision-making process – faster response
Focus on possible benefits on Training, bigger financial base, introduction of up-to-date technology, transfer of technology, international exposure and scope.
Consider counter-benefits of higher fees

Q 3 Safety practices in selected industries.
Ans:     Pick one industry of your choice.
Be careful in assessing the adequacy of the safety practices. It should be adequate but certain aspects still need to be addressed.
Safety policy
Personal Protective Equipment
Include safety costs in quotes
Look at issues on awareness, implementation and enforcement.
Look at Hazop and Hazan; Safety audits; job safety analysis, contractors scope,
Fixed installations – passive protection
PPE; hardware and software of safety and fire-fighting.

Q 4 IEM and promotion of professionalism.
Ans:     Know well the current organization, roles, functions, activities and influence of IEM and suggest areas of improvement towards promoting professionalism of engineers.
            Areas may include:
                        Consultants to government / single voice on national issues
                        Public awareness of the profession / what we do, what we can provide
                        Interaction and cooperation between professions
                        Regulatory body on ethics and professional conduct

Q 5 Positive impacts on contributions of engineers.
Ans:     Focus on big impacts and not the ordinary.
            Pick up maybe one extraordinary example from each common discipline of engineering and elaborate how each has contributed immensely to the well-being of mankind.
            Protection of the environment; combating poverty and disease; design of super-efficient systems, educational facilities, IT infrastructure etc.

Q 6 Self-promotion of engineers without using commission and anything similar to get jobs.
Ans:     Examine issues on advertising for services.
            Progress step-by-step:
                        Good self-projection              
Participate in lectures

                        Promote through exhibitions
                        Lead and perform by showing good examples

Q 7 Steps to prevent corruption and unethical practices.
Ans:     Practise good set of procedures
Abide to laws, rules and regulations
Be transparent, use open tender, subject work to audit, use of standard specs, competitive bidding for supplies, fair evaluation, no deviations of specs or alternative offer, QA/QC, pay employees well.

Q 8 Ethical considerations of a rushed land clearing job.
Ans:     Job behind time with conflict between environmental requirements and pressure to finish the job in time; temptation to:
Sub-standard work, by-passing procedures, inducement to inspectors, over-time and unsafe and night work. Consider to reschedule in order to put in place preventive measures.

Ans:     Redefine scope

Ans:     Pick up an industry: discuss needs of regulations; examine consequences positive as well as negative; good to the environment, higher investment and higher cost of operation.

Q 12 Cost effectiveness and HSE requirements.
Ans:     Involve design; cost reduction to achieve higher productivity; better health, safety and environmental considerations in the long run will be cost-effective.

Q 13 How engineers can keep abreast with development of technology.
Ans:     Discuss benefits of bearing in mind HSE issues in an engineer’s work. Discuss aspects of CPD to update the knowledge and competency of engineers.

Q 14 Request of irregular proposals from a turn-key contractor.
Ans:     Examine the pros and cons of a turnkey contract vis-a-vis the position of the engineer. Give examples of possible requests in question and what could be done by referring to codes and standards.

Q 15 Issues on virtual labs.

Ans:     Discuss the real benefits of having real labs for various engineering disciplines. See if the objectives can be achieved by alternative means including virtual labs. Examine the cost, convenience and effectiveness impacts. Elaborate areas where the virtual labs are better.
